Gothic people lived in germania in the 16th century.
I would rather you not want to be "goth"
For many of the "goths" nowadays are simply into it for the fashion or the music, they dont actually live it.
I have been living it for 7 or 8 years and it doesnt involve partying or shopping at hot topic (although they have a good selection of Band tees and thats where I was finally able to find my fav. skinny puppy shirt.)
Its a lifestyle, not a type of person or a fashion. You cant "BE" goth or "WEAR" goth, you live goth...
Hope that helps a little.

Goths were germanic warriors that invaded the romans. At least thats what i read.
But yeah I agree with that guy babe, & no one really has the right to judge you.. In fact i bet the people that told you you werent probably werent themselves considered goth.. Its not about the anger or angst or vampires..
Goth for me is being solitary & indulged in my own little world. reading my E.A.Poe & Oscar wilde.. Sure I love the clothes & dark music, I get up at 3:30pm everyday & stay up way past 4am, but thats just life..
Dont let them get to you.. Tell them you have better things to do than argue & to ---- off! |

`labels suck. the fact that no one can agree on a definition, to me, means there really is none. i mainly like the music, and maybe there are a few other things about me that fit the 'stereotype' (like dark clothes, like to stay up late at nite) but the only thing that draws me to sites like these is hoping to find things in common with people....forget the labels.

Labels are the most VITAL aspect of civilization. Labels are the basis of all language. Every word is a label of either an object or a concept. Labels are not wrong, stupid, nor do they "suck." Labels are perhaps the best thing ever developed. They allow us to express ourselves with other people so they understand us. Without lables the world would indeed suck. Try communicating with out using a label. Even gesters are labels.
There is nothing wrong and everything right about using labels. The only issue is that it requires more than a single lable to be informative about a person. That said some labels pack a lot of info in them to only a select group like your name for instance. That means a lot to people who know you but means nothing to someone who doesn't. As long as we are aware that labels about people are incomplete in that they only tell a portion of the story then there is no danger in using them. And I don't know anyone who takes a second to think beleives that one word/label tells all about a person.

In advance, apologies if I use the term Goth and it might offend some people.
From past experience, I'd say you can tell fake Goths, from genuine Goths whom live the culture. I'd say partly its tastes and what people say they like. Okay not everyone whom lives the culture is the same, thats what makes the culture so diverse, but when people say such pathetic things like.
"I'm so Goth, I like black and I like this band, they're so goth". Its when people promote themselves and keep saying I'm a Goth, yer I'm this and that, its like they try to hard to conform to a non-conformist culture which is sort of hypocritical. Sometimes straight away, you can instantly pick up that aura that someone gives off and you know they're genuine or not. Especially when you meet people whom grew up in the late 70s and still live the lifestyle and culture. If people are just beginning to live the culture, I'l gladly talk and help, but its when some people see it as something to do with their time, it annoy's me.
What makes goth?..Personally I'd say its a state of mind, a culture that promotes originality and creativity. A culture that allows you to talk about any topic and break taboos. Also intertwined with a sort of escapism from the everyday gray's of the world. Its the mindset of a person, its how they think.
You might meet people who have all the money in the world to buy the latest in the music, the clothing and style, but if thats what people determine as Goth, they've missed the point. Its a mindset, an alternate plain people can relate to each other on not by clothes ware, though sometimes both do go hand in hand.
Also, there's different types, whether it be Cyber, Industrial, Victorian, Medieval, Fantasy, old school, lots. The different types of art that are associated with each, or also intertwined with each other. Just be yourself and like what you like and hate what you hate. I don't like labels, or using labels and don't care what other people think. As long as you're true to yourself, thats all that matters.
Come to think of it, if some idiot says Goth as an insult, say for example in the street, treat it like a compliment. Okay it doesn't seem like it, but basically deep down it highlights your original and creative.
I hope this is helpful.

I don't think it is so much a matter of being goth or not goth all the time. There are plenty of people who wear bright colors and think dark things. Also, goths are just not going to not want to date you because you aren't a goth... ... right? meh.

`The easy answer is: You don't....judge anyone to be something or not that is. Which has obviously been said by many here already...and I agree... Who you are is distinctly your own business.
It's sad that some people will judge others in this way, especially when they are part of a minority group such as "goths" who themselves are judged by others unfavourably...

As previously stated, labels are necessary. I get very tired of people complaining about them. Personally, Goth means a lot of different things. Its a subculture, a musical genre, a fashion, etc. People shouldn't worry so much about if they fit in or not. Everyone is special and different.

no one in this world has any right to say who's who. then again we live in a society were everyone is afraid of that which doesn't appear normal. Be who you are regardless of what people say. most likely their jealous cause they can't escape their own mundane lives.
