Weekend "goths" are an insult.

Well hello hello!

I'm sure that many of you will see where i'm coming from on this one. Being someone who lives every single day this way, I still find it aggrivating when going to a club and seeing these individuals who basically play "dress up" and go out. Most of the time they look absolutely ridiculous and act like complete jerks. The fangs, the capes and all that garbage. I've dressed this way for the past 13 years and hate taking crap from little kids who think they know what its all about because they know who "Voltaire" is. (Dont get me wrong, he can be incrediably witty and i relatively enjoy him)

In saying that, its becoming increasingly hard to meet "real" people anymore. Seems like forever since I've met someone in the goth subculture who wasnt a complete moron or tried to impress me with telling me they're a vampire. *sigh*Perhaps I'm just becoming discouraged and jaded. Please tell me there are still some honest, fun people out there?!?!

i see one guy in a cape and fangs when im out but its not just a weekend thing he wears it all the time! he even superglues his fangs in lol. i know what your talking about thou. i was in the local goth club the other night and i was shocked to see how many wannabees there was in there! by the end of the night id met up with a small group of people i know pretty well and all the young wannabees were throwing up because they couldent handle their drinks! oh it pisses me off all that because they then have the nerve to come up to ME just because ive gone out in jeans and a t-shirt to complain cos i dont fit in! when i have been a member of the club for the past 4 years now and a regular customer. they are the underage ones who go just because it has cheap drinks (and i mean DIRT cheap! 80p for Vodka and Coke where can ya go wrong?) they just annoy me so much!

I think people need to relax here. First everyone starts being a goth/joining the scene at different stages of their life. i remember when there was no term goth except to describe a tribe of European "barbarians." The term used was death punks. That said i was a gothling at one point and i imagine i looked like a "week-end" goth or poseur to the death punks that where older and more experienced than myself.

One of the prevailing attitudes of the goth culture is pretension, which is fine but lets put things into perspective here. I have known many professionals who look conservative at work but who I would call “real even though they only “dress goth on the week-ends. Some jobs just dont allow you to dress how you want. Attitude makes you a goth not the fact that you dress a given way 7 days a week or only 2 days a week. Being new to the scene also doesnt somehow make you unreal or fake it makes you simply new to the scene. There will always be someone older to the scene than you and younger to the scene than yourself, remember that. Be more accepting to people in general and relax. If all you look for is the flaws and “fakeness of people than that is all you will see regardless if its there or not.

I remembered in the 80s the older goths would “mentor younger goths. Help them with make-up tips and introduce them to people and the scene. Expose them to bands they many not have known about. Try introducing yourself to people who are new to your club, invite them to your table with your friends. I think you will find that these people are far more real than you give the credit for. If all the regulars isolate themselves from the new people then the scene fractures and dies or gets stale. That young blood is the only thing that keeps the scene alive. I look back on my life an I cringe at some of the boneheaded things I did. Luckily I had a pretty cool couple that saw me at the club the second time I went. They knew I was new and invited me to join them. At the tender age of 19 (I looked far to young to get into the club underage so had to wait until I was legal) I had little experience in the scene, except from a few friends at school. Oh I thought I knew a lot and thought I was an expert but I wasnt and I learned a lot about the philosophy of being a death punk. And yes there was a meaning behind the pale skin dyed black hair and make-up back then. It was expressed best in this manner, “The world looks pretty on the outside but its dead and dying on the inside. We try to make ourselves look dead on the outside but try to be the best human being on the inside we can. To act as a photo negative on society.

Much of that philosophy has faded but you ask the old timers in their late 30s and 40s about it and Im sure you will find that indeed that attitude was a part of the goth lifestyle and still is for many of us. The point being that I had to learn things and be taught by others. I didnt magically know everything about the scene. Did that make me a poseur? Or a week-end goth? Perhaps if you took some of these gothlings under your wing and mentored them you would get more out of the scene then you ever knew was possible.

It is all about who you are. Just because someone does it once a year, maybe that is who they are. Someone may do it every day, and they are a poser. The bottom line is why. Get to know them a little better and find out why they do what they do. Some of them may be doing it for the wrong reasons, and you could be the one to point them to the correct path.

Everybody dresses up when they go out, but I agree that sometimes they look very ridiculous. I live in a small town so I don't see that (or anything) a lot. I just got stuck with emo kids in school. Its less offensive to see a kid with a cape than to be asked some of the questions people at my school asked.

I agree. alot of people think its about the clothes and the music. but it's not. it's all about your attitude and the way you carry yourself in this narrow minded world of ours. then again that's just my opinion.

Some schools/jobs are so restrictive they have look "normal" during the week.
And if they are new, they have to find their look. Some people look crap in makeup, or don't have the confidence to look good in a cape/leather/fishnet. When they work out what works for them, and find their look and make long term friends they "grow" both in maturity and as people generally.

We've all been there and realised looking back "Damn, I looked a right cock" but it was all part of the process.

`Same here...I work at a nursing home which dress code is strict even down to the make up. I can get away with just a little.lol I very much still consider myself a Gothling even though ive been in the scene for a few years because im still growing and still finding myself. (Airgedok) does make valid points. I am a gothling to the older ones and to the younger ones vice versa.Ive been very lucky to befriend a few good people who enjoy my company for what its worth.

It's strange how so many people believe their goth.
I mean come on people how long is it going to take for you to realize that goth is a staight of mind not a fasion trend.
My spelling is atrocious I'm sorry its been a long day.
But I understand what you mean its hard for me to find people like me as well.
In the end its nice to be alone trust me its better.
You don't have to deal with drama or any of those redicules questions like (Why do you dress like that? Are you a vampire? Is it Halloween?) Its goes on and trust me its annoying to say the least.[/i][/b]

`I use to dress goth all the time. But not so much anymore. Only when I'm in the mood. I really don't think it has to do with the way you dress anymore. Its about who you are on the inside. Your interests and personality. When I do dress Gothic its just icing on the cake. I know I'm different. I don't need to advertise to the world.
