Im Curious how people choose this life style, as in what happened. Was it a traumatic event, was it that some of u had a affinity for the bad guys since u were little like me, was it to get back at society, was it a desprite out cry for attention, was it to scare people into leaving u alone? Im just curious, and want to hear a few others' stories if they will share. I have been this way all my life, i had an inborn affinity for evil... I have only done the black cloths thing for 4 years tho, i started being obsessed with skulls because of my new found faith in my new religous faith of Death worship. As u can imagine as a cultist here in this small city it was hard for me to get along with others at the only highschool in town, many were and still are very afraid of me... kids started inventing rummors about me that i was apart of some vampire cult that killed kids behind the bleachers...of course this childish accusation is not true, i found it to be very irritating to have kids do that stupid Hissing thing to me. Mostly i was left alone, which was nice, i liked being avoided. Some people of this Gothic subculture don't like that tho, to be alienated, however that unfortunatly is one of the possible consequences for choosing this life style. I don't mind it at all, being by myself which is probably how i will spend the remainder of my life. I really don't care for the "goth" label tho, people are just people...but oh well... everyone focuses on the small things. Thats a summary sorta about my reason, I'd like to hear some of yours.. why u choose to be this way, or maybe u claim to have not had a choice... either way, a response would be nice....

Thanks for replying, this site seems so dead. None the less i don't think i agree, i think for some it is a choice, not sure if they would be called posers. I never once cconsidered myself gothic, just a person but i don't care if im categorized, that just human nature. Im more of just a plain freak, im not really excepted by the gothic crowd, but then again i really have no freinds because it's my fault for not putting forth any effort to meet someone, no matter what subculture anyone is in u can always find people who don't like u, i never did work hard to alienate myself and then blame it on the world like i see some people in my town do. But i also believe you're right because i was just born the way i am, a sadistic person with posible psychosis to a very normal and caring family. Im sorry im not making sense im a walking contradiction, a hypocrit, but oh well it's all meaningless in the end.

well, quite honestly, I was introduced to somewhat of a gothic style when I was 4, when I first watched Beetlejuice, and I saw Lydia Deetz, and I was like "Cool, I wanna look like that." Besides, goth isn't just a style, it can be an attitude. It's also a way of expressing yourself, not the whole "ooh, I'm goth, so I have to be depressed all the time." Goths are quite usually intellectuals, not all vapid like *most* preppy people, not always going "Ohhh, look at the cute things I just bought!" and crap like that. Yeah, well, if that made sense to anyone else, um, I guess you could talk to me or something.

Posted:     Post subject: More replies

Hey thanks for another reply, this is Ravenrose, i just changed my account name i got bored with it. Im not sure exactly what kind of responses i was even looking for when i wrote this question. suppose i wanted to see how other people thought. I have always been an observer, of other people and blind to myself, i never saw myself as any form of indevidual or entity of any kind. I just seem to watch others sorta like an ant farm... I wonder at some base level does every human being need to conform somewhat? i suppose so, conform to the mass or confrom to the unconformists which ever mental profile fits the person of the group of their choosing. I have always been an outcast, even amongst fellow "goths" it's human beings in general, i never asked to be outcasted but i never asked to be apart of things either. I never worked hard at alienating myself to then turn around and blame the world for it, i blame everything on myself, even other people's problems, in my own universe i am the cause of everything bad. I am a very masochistic, and at a very unhealthy level sadistic, and cruel. i don't know why i was born this way, but i was, the ironic thing is i was born this way to a very normal, stable happy family environment. I thought i had to blame my parents for me being this way like everyone else, sorta so i had a reason for being this way so people could except my being cruel. but i realized something i really don't care either way, but most of all i am sorry for the sakes of my parents... it's my fault, i probably should have been aborted. Then again maybe i have some perpose to serve. Going thro this a past friend of mine really made me hate myself for useing a scape-goat, and i now hate anyone else who uses any kind of scape goat and does not take responsability for themselves. To this friend i once had if she ever reads this by some chance... i am sorry for everything and even tho u will never forgive me or be my friend again i thank u for making me see the light when i needed to, and to stop blaming others when i have myself to blame. I really came to this site only to share my poetry and talk breifly with people, im not really looking for friends or girl freinds, because eventually everyone goes away from me, and that is probably my fault. Some people are ment to be alone in life tho...keep up with the responses thanks as well.

I just sort of came to the realization one day that I didn't quite "fit in" with my friends...and at first I tried. Well...I wanted to try...dressing in all the "trendy" clothes..but at that point I was pretty heavy and couldnt fit in them...After a rather traumatic event regarding my weight, I went the final steps into a darker, more comfortable me...and then being happier with me, I also dropped about 50lbs. I don't think that the "Normal" people really realize that you can be truely happy being dark. I was miserably trying to be everyone elses definition of happy.

Thanks!!

I totally agree with what someone said.

You either born with "it" or ya not born with "it"

What "it" maybe, might take you years to find after you discover the alternative music scene. It took me 5 years before i found goregrind. Every other bands i listened to got me going but not quite took me over the edge, but then i heard CBT's "Egoleech" album and it was like having S-- foir the first time.

Just recently i have started to listen to hardcore abit more. Musically similar to Gore-grind, but more genuine passion and feeling, then singing about sick s---.

Still, i cant find anything better then goregrind

since i can remeber, i have always like the dark. i don't know if it's insomnia or what, but i've always been up in the night. i love the color black, and always have. i've never got into hip hop and sh*t like that... i stuck to popular stuff for a while when i was younger, but then i heard Linkin Park's "Crawling". that started me on the path of hard rock... then i found Eminem's "Way I Am". i was very angry as a child and it caused some major issues for me, the music that is metal, kept me afloat by enabling me to channel my anger, hurt and fear. Disturbed was my next step, that led to Korn, Slipknot... but then i heard Otep. from there i looked for that heavy metal high... COF (Cradle of Filth for those that don't know), was the next one, Lamb of God, As I Lay Dying... i'm constantly looking for the next lvl of anger. this has shaped my view of goth... that and interacting with them on a group lvl. Goth is a feeling in my opinion. Labels occur, and Goth is the one that i feel the most comfortable with. if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Hrm. Well definitely sounds like a nature versus nurture. argument.

I guess exposure to certain influences from music to alternative religions did play heavy role in who I am now. The more I learned about the gothic subculture I found it ideally suited for my budding tastes. Inspiring creativity in all realms of pleasure and pain ha.

However the question remains there anyone reported to become a "goth" while not being exposed to any branch of the sub-culture?

The expression can be there, since its can be said its universal to feel like a loner, rebel, dreary poet, etc.

but it seems to me that anyone sprouting into "Goth as we know it" isn't determined by birthright.

yet the foundation is there.

Hi, new to the forum, this is my first post. Thought it would be a good place to start.

What made me goth? Well, let's see, it was so long ago, but I think the first draw I had to it was at the age of five, wanting to grow up to be Morticia Addams. Yep, good place to start. I liked to play in the local cemeteries and liked horror movies. Loved Alice Cooper. None of those things are goth, but they morphed into what I would become as the years went on.

I've always been attracted to the darker side of life, whether it be books, music or art. This of course, set me apart from most of the people around me who were very conformist and straight laced. I'm from a very conservative city where everyone blends to the extreme. It also made me very isolated and way too introverted. However, I do like to stand out and see the reactions when I walk down the street in goth clothes. Guess, I have a bit of the extrovert hidden somewhere in here.

I think there's some truth into what was said that it's something that you're either born with, or not. There has to be that lure for it somewhere in your mind. Somebody who dresses in clothes from the Gap and listens to Justin Timberlake, isnt' going to suddenly go goth with one life altering experience. If they don't like the dark, they're gonna stay in the light.

I agree; it was natural for me as well. I was a quiet, shy and rather anti-social kid. As a teenager I started out listening to horror-punk (The Cramps, The Damned, The Misfits, etc.) from which goth is a spin-off. Yes, I'm 41 but the lifestyle is ageless and simply becomes more defined with time.

Death makes angels of us all and gives us wings where we had shoulders smooth as raven's claws...

`I'm the same, 41, was just old enough to understand the UK punk scene before it imploded, and while I was into generic mainstream heavy metal, I still stuck with The Damned, Souxsie, The Cure and the like, then later Sisters of Mercy etc.

Still going to gigs, still listening out for new stuff, but also recently been getting into the darker side of US country music, and Delta Blues, especially that devised to play on a cigar box or similar home made guitar. I've even started to experiment with making and playing my own, but that is very early days.
